A new Code of Ethics for Social Work of
the General Council of Social Work was unanimously approved
June
2012 – The last June 9th the new Code of Ethics of our profession was unanimously
approved in an Extraordinary General Meeting. This document is the result of
work over three years ago by the General Council of Social Work, an Ethic
Expert Committee, different Ethic Groups and the Professional Colleges of
Social Work. The first code of ethics was adopted in 1999 and it has had six
editions.

The General Council of Social Work receives the Gold Cross of the Civil Order of Social Solidarity 2011.
June 2012 - The Spanish Ministry
of Health, Social Services and Equality granted
the Golden Cross of the Civil Order of
Social Solidarity 2011 to the General Council of Social Work. This award recognizes individuals and institutions
that have distinguished themselves in
the promotion and development of
activities and services related to solidarity and social action. Ana I. Lima, President of GCSW, received
the prize from the Queen Sofia herself. Also Patrocinio de las Heras, Spanish
social worker, was awarded with this Gold Cross for her commitment to human and
social rights.

June
2012 – With the new Spanish Mediation Law, Social workers will resolve some conflicts by way of
mediation, without going to court. Also the Professional Colleges of Social
Work are recognized as professional bodies to mediate.
The General Council of Social Work was IFSW General Assembly and World
Conference on Social Work and Social Development in Stockholm.
July 2012 – The president Ana I. Lima attended and participated in the IFSW World Assembly and the IFSW Europe informal meeting. During the Conference, Ana Lima presented the Alliance for the Defense of Public Social Services System with a paper and participated in a workshop about the role of social workers in social emergencies and disasters. Besides the GCSW was invited to participate in the Latin American and Caribbean IFSW informal meeting; it contacted with Social Work representatives from other countries and engaged potential collaborative links. Also it presented a triptych with all Spanish Social Work publications. In addition the GCSW explained the campaign called “Marea Naranja - Orange Tide” and led by Spanish social workers by cuts in social services.

April 2012 – The Orange Tide is followed by social workers, citizens and other social professionals and has emerged because of cuts in social services. Its slogan is "Cuts No. Don’t shut up!". This campaign looks after the maintenance and quality of social services and the defense of human rights of citizens and professionals. The initiative has gained an important media attention and is being carried out many activities throughout the country.
Furthermore, the GCSW has joined with unions, other
organizations and professionals associations against government cuts. All this
organizations and thousands of Spanish joined in a protest against the crisis
and its repercussion on 15th September. GCSW and Spanish social
workers will continue to work in this struggle.

Collaboration with the Council of
International Fellowship in Spain
October
2012 – The Council has begun working with the coordinator of the International
Professional
Exchange Programs for professional of social work, social welfare and human
services in Spain. Both Councils want to include the visit of foreign social
workers in Spain for 2014.

October
2012 – The CGTS and Professional College of Social
Workers in Madrid had a meeting with representatives of the Swiss Embassy in
Spain and the Social Welfare Section for Swiss abroad. Their interest was in
receiving information management and the current situation about social
services in Spain.

Campaign “Rebel against the poverty”
October 2012 – The CGTS, along with other social entities and NGOs (Spanish Alliance
against Poverty, EAPN, Global Call to Action against Poverty, etc.) participated in a
campaign against the cuts, the “death” of the social policies and the
increasing poverty in our country during the International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty.

Publications and Journal “Social Services and Social Policy”
The
General Council has published the last edition of the Journal “Social Services
and Social Policy” and soon a new copy about: “Active Ageing II”. Also the Editorial Committee has programmed the
last number of this year about: “What is
the social intervention?”, which important social workers around the world will
write.
In
addition the General Council has published a new book: Social Work, an Analysis to Action, written by Ana I. Lima.
