MA/ Postgraduate Diploma in the Ethics of Social Welfare at Keele University‏

The Centre for Professional Ethics at Keele University is now accepting applications for the 13th annual intake onto our

MA/ Postgraduate Diploma in the Ethics of Social Welfare

This course provides an opportunity to explore and gain a deeper and more systematic understanding of the ethical issues, and moral problems, which arise in the field of social welfare. By focusing on specific problems and ethical challenges that social welfare professionals face in the course of their work it aims to deepen understanding of the philosophical bases of good practice, and to enhance the ability to think systematically about these decisions.

This specialised course is taught in a series of four intensive three day blocks to making it suitable for people in full-time work. The blocks and dates for 2009/10 are as follows:

Module One - Introduction to Moral and Social Theory Monday 11th to Wednesday13th October 2010
Module Two - Autonomy, Responsibility and punishment Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th December 2010
Module Three - Equality, Discrimination and Rights Monday 31st January to Wednesday 2nd February 2011
Module Four - Ethics & Social Welfare - Contemporary Debates Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd March 2011

Attached to each block is a 4,000 word assignment which must be passed in order to progress to the second year of the course. At the end of year one, assuming successful completion of the assignments, students can choose to finish their studies with a postgraduate diploma or continue to the MA year.

During this second year students complete a 15,000 - 20,000 word dissertation on an approved topic of their choice. Full time study is also possible; the blocks, assignments and dissertation must be completed in one year in this mode of study.
